Our Name
Layyasaaram draws from the Sanskrit ideas of layya (लय — rhythm) and sāram (सारम् — essence), reflecting the shared foundations that connect India’s diverse artistic traditions. Together, Layyasaaram means “the essence of rhythm” — a name that affirms rhythm as the living foundation upon which all Indian classical arts are built.
Our Mission
Guided by the timeless traditions of India, Layyasaaram is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the rich heritage of Indian classical music and arts. Through our motto of Perform, Educate, and Collaborate, we promote initiatives that spread awareness and knowledge about Indian culture, music, and arts across the continental United States.
Our Purpose
Our institute embraces the structured precision of Carnatic music, the expansive improvisation of melodic ragas, the rhythmic intricacy of talas, and the geometry of dance forms depicting the evolving expressions of contemporary movement. We bring these lineages into conversation, creating a space where students explore technique, meaning, and cultural depth as a unified artistic journey.
Layya is the thread that holds a musical composition together — and so too is our purpose: to be the connecting thread between the living traditions of India and the communities we serve. We strive to ensure that the saaram of Indian classical arts takes root and flourishes wherever it is shared. Layyasaaram stands for harmony across traditions — a place where rhythm becomes a pathway to understanding, creativity, and community.
Our work is guided by three pillars:
Perform • Educate • CollaborateWe conduct, organize, and provide music and dance performances featuring local and visiting artists and musicians. We organize events to spread awareness about the arts and culture of India.
We facilitate training and outreach programs, lectures, demonstrations, and workshops related to Indian culture and classical music and dance. We publish original material and collaborate with regional, national, and international organizations.
We invite recognized artists from India and conduct concert tours and cultural exchange programs, forging meaningful connections between India’s traditions and communities across the United States.
“In rhythm, we find the essence. In the essence, we find ourselves.”Layyasaaram Institute of Indian Arts
